  ACCOUNTING (Acctng) - responsible for recording, verifying and reporting all assets, liabilities, income and expenses in the accounting ledgers to which debt and credit entries are chronologically posted to record changes in value.
  BENEFITS & COMPENSATION (Comp) - responsible for carrying out the corporation's policy in regard to compensation and benefits for all employees. Can also be involved with the design and development of these programs. Usually reports into Human Resources.
  BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT (Business Development) - responsible for the development of a strategy for ensuring a business realizes its full potential. It is an overall strategy that begins by placing the customer at the center of everything a business does. Business development also involves employing practical techniques and strategies that will improve all their business processes.
 

CASH MANAGEMENT (CshMgt) - responsible for the management of U.S. and/or foreign dollars (cash) flowing through the treasury department.

 

CHAIRMAN (Chrmn) - member of a corporation's Board of Directors who presides over its meetings and who is the highest ranking officer in the corporation.  The Chairmanship could be a prestigious reward for someone in a prominent position, a large stockholder or a family member.  It may carry little or no real power in terms of policy or operating decisions.

 

CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER (CAO) - responsible for overseeing administrative functions within the organization, including some or all of the following:  Finance, Planning, Human Resources Benefits, Purchasing, and Logistics.

 

CHIEF COMPLIANCE OFFICER (Compliance Officer) - is a corporate official in charge of overseeing and managing compliance issues within an organization, ensuring, for example, that a company is complying with regulatory requirements, and that the company and its employees are complying with internal policies and procedures.

 

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) - responsible for the activities of a company.  Usually an additional title held by the chairman (in larger companies) or president (in smaller companies).

 

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER (CFO) - responsible for handling funds, signing checks, keeping financial records and financial planning for a corporation.  Usual title is VP-Finance in large corporations and Treasurer or Controller in smaller companies.

 

CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER (MIS/EDP) - responsible for running computer hardware and developing application systems (software) for the corporation.  Also carries the title of Chief  Technology Officer.

  CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER (COO) - usually the president (in large companies) or an EVP.  Responsible for day-to-day management of the company including personnel and administration.
 

CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER (CSO) - is involved with security initiatives across the company, usually focused on information technology. This executive function generally reports to the Chief Information Officer. Not only is the CSO responsible for IT security, but also additional security responsibilities, such as access to company grounds and the physical safety of employees. Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Information Security Officer (ISO) are equivalent titles.

 

CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER/ENGINEERING (Engin) - oversees the actual design and physical viability of a corporation’s products.

 

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS (Commun) - responsible for the development and execution of advertising, public relations, public affairs, and members relations programs, together with internal and external communications to promote understanding, acceptance and support of corporate activities and objectives by employees and subscribing public.

 

CORPORATE SECRETARY (Secy) - responsible for corporate governance matters, including board, shareholder, and committee meetings, preparation of proxy statements, and all public disclosure document filing.  May also be responsible for keeping records, taking care of correspondence and other writing tasks for the company.

 

 CORPORATE TAX (Tax) - responsible for tax planning (to study and maintain familiarity with existing and proposed tax laws and regulations), and tax compliance (to determine tax liabilities, prepare and file tax returns, etc.).

 

CUSTOMER SERVICE (CusSvc) - responsible for the department which services inquiries, complaints, and/or orders from both the consumer and the business community.  The department is sometimes called the call center.

 

DIVISION HEAD EXECUTIVE (DivHead)  - is an important line-of-business decision maker, responsible for overseeing company operations of a specific division, product, or product group. Titles will generally be of Division President or other Senior Executive level.

 

E-Commerce (E-Comm) - responsible for the buying and selling of products and services over the Internet for their company. This function may also encompass Internet strategies and management.

  ENVIRONMENT (Envir) - oversees federal, state and local, and government compliance issues relating to the corporation’s impact on the environment.  May manage corporate activities involving recycling, pollution control, safety, waste management, and/or community environmental resources.
 

FINANCIAL CONTROLLER/COMPTROLLER (FinCon) - chief accountant of a company responsible for internal accounting programs, systems and procedures, data processing, acquisition analysis, financial planning and possible internal auditing.

 

GENERAL COUNSEL (General Counsel) - the highest ranking in-house legal person. This individual either acts as liaison with outside law firms or is the manager of an in-house group of attorneys.

  GOVERNMENT/PUBLIC AFFAIRS (G&PAffrs) – responsible for assisting in the improvement of public policies and the performance of the government. This person does this by disseminating research on public issues, and by facilitating the application of that research to the issues and problems confronting decision-makers and others who address public issues.
 

HUMAN RESOURCES, CHIEF OFFICER (People) - responsible for overseeing all aspects regarding employees of the company including interviews, company policy, hiring, training benefits, reviews, etc.

 

Human Resources, 2nd Level (HR2nd) – identifies the management level reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (i.e., Director-Human Resources, Assistant Director-Human Resources, Manager-Human Resources, Assistant Manager-Human Resources, etc.).

 

INFORMATION SYSTEMS/MIS, 2nd Level (MIS2nd) – identifies the management level eporting to Chief Information Officer (i.e., Director-Information Systems, Assistant Director-MIS, Manager-Information Systems, Assistant Manager-MIS, etc.).

 

INSURANCE/RISK MANAGEMENT (Insur) - responsible for the protection of the corporation's assets (plant, equipment & personnel) through insurance policies.

 

INTERNAL AUDIT (Audit) - responsible for the examination and verification of a corporation's accounting documents and supporting data to determine the fairness, consistency and conformity with the generally accepted accounting principles.

 

INTERNATIONAL (Intl) - the highest ranking person involved in the international activities of a company.  This person may be:  a person who oversees international divisions; a person in charge of selling products outside the headquarters home country, etc.  This function will vary widely depending on the type of firm in question.

 

 INVESTMENT & PENSION SELECTION (Rtmnt) - responsible for selecting outside custodians/trustees for managing the corporation's pension/retirement fund and 401K program, selecting the retirement/pension fund, and/or managing the pension fund in-house.

  INVESTOR RELATIONS/ANALYST CONTACT (InvRel) - responsibilities include:  all corporate communications (press releases, annuals, etc.) to ensure corporation is understood, the full and timely disclosure of information, responding to requests for reports and information from shareholders, brokers, analysts, etc., relations with investment bankers, stock specialists, brokers, etc. and making sure shares are properly valued in the market.
 

KEY BANKING CONTACT (KeyBnk)- responsible for day-to-day activities with commercial banks including existing debt compliance, setting up credit lines, payroll system, bank reconciliation, etc., and/or responsible for coordinating all activity with investment bankers including stock transfers, shelf registration, stock underwriting, stock repurchases, preferred stock offerings, debt, etc.

 

LEGAL COUNSEL (Legal Counsel) - a lawyer appointed or engaged to advise or represent a client in legal matters (as negotiations or the drafting of documents).

 

LOGISTICAL/SHIPPING (Logist) - ensures the most efficient distribution system for product.  Including shipping (inter/intra state and overseas), warehousing and distribution.  Sears, Roebuck hired the logistical head of the Persian Gulf war to oversee its Logistics area.

 

MANUFACTURING/OPERATIONS HEAD (Mfg) - responsible for overseeing the factory/plant/company operations of a product or groups of products.

 

MANUFACTURING/OPERATIONS, 2 nd level (Mfg2nd) – identifies the management level reporting to Manufacturing/Operations Head (i.e., Director-Manufacturing, Assistant Director-Operations, Manager-Manufacturing, Assistant Manager-Operations, etc.).

 

MARKETING, CHIEF OFFICER (Mktg) - responsible for moving goods and services from the company to the consumer.  Includes product origination and design, development, distribution, advertising, promotion, publicity, etc.

 

MARKETING, 2nd level (Mkt2nd) – identifies the management level reporting to Chief Marketing Officer (i.e., Director-Marketing, Assistant Director-Marketing, Manager-Marketing,  Assistant Manager-Marketing, etc.).

 

MEETING/TRAVEL PLANNER (Travel) - responsible for arranging company meetings and travel plans for executives.

 

PRESIDENT (Pres) - second highest ranking officer in a corporation after the chairman (unless CEO is used as a separate function).  The president is appointed by the Board of Directors and usually reports directly to the board.  In small companies, the president is usually the CEO; whereas in large companies the president is usually the COO.

 

PRODUCT MANAGEMENT (ProdMgmt) - responsible for developing, commercializing and managing new products and services for their company. Product Managers are also responsible for strengthening and positioning their company brands.

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS (Public Relations) - responsible for developing and creating the institutional image and message for the company. The person works closely with both the staff leadership team and the President/CEO and Board of Directors to help shape the institution’s message and image.

 

PURCHASING (Prchse) - the senior most individual involved in purchasing for that company or subsidiary.

 

QUALITY (Qualty) - responsible for all aspects of product/service quality at a company.  The job function is comparable to the Malcolm Baldrige Award winner type person.

 

REGION MANAGER (Region Manager) - responsible for growing revenues and managing relationships with property owners & customers in a specified geographic region

 

REAL ESTATE FACILITIES AND SELECTION (Land) - responsible for maintenance and selection of land and all physical property related to it.

 

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (R&D) - responsible for researching viability of new products and enhancements to existing products, the development of such products and their introduction to the marketplace.  Ensures that relevant research is carried out and supervises through development stage and into new product introduction.

 

SALES, CHIEF OFFICER (Sales) - directs the company's sales and distribution organizations to achieve optimum distribution and exposure of products, provide excellent customer service and communications, minimize costs, develop required organization and continuity of manpower and assure that corporate sales volume and profitability objectives are achieved.

 

SALES, 2nd level (Sales2nd) – identifies the management level reporting to Chief Sales Officer (i.e., Director-Sales, Assistant Director-Sales, Manager-Sales, Assistant Manager-Sales, etc).

 

SHAREHOLDER RELATIONS (ShrRlt) - can be part of investor relations role.  Responsible for communicating with individual shareholders of the company, dealing with the transfer agent (commercial bank that maintains records of stock owners), conducting shareholder analyst, etc.

 

STRATEGIC PLANNING (Plan) - responsible for planning the future direction of the corporation, including new products, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, etc.

 

TELECOMMUNICATIONS (Phone) - responsible for overseeing information exchanged by electrical or electronic means for the company (i.e., Fax & Telephones).  Also oversees wide and local area networks.

 

TRAINING (Train) - an individual, usually working in the Human Resource area, responsible for all aspects of employee training.  From individuals on the assembly line to executive training programs.

 

TREASURER (Treas) - responsible for receipt, custody, investment and disbursement of corporate funds, and for borrowings.  If company is public, the treasurer is responsible for the maintenance of a market for its securities.  The law of many states requires that a corporation have a treasurer; therefore this title is often combined with one or more of the other financial titles.

 

VICE CHAIRMAN (VChrmn) - individual on the Board of Directors who runs the meeting in the absence of the Chairman.  Like the Chairman, this individual may, or may not, be an executive of the Company.  In very large corporations, there will often be several Vice Chairmen (or Deputy Chairmen).

 

WEB MASTER (Web Master) - person (or group) who maintains the Web server and keeps it running.
